Last July I ventured to Sicily with Aussie journalist, Josephine McKenna to photograph the village of Gangi, a small town in the Sicilian countryside that’s making big waves. To breathe new life into Gangi’s waning population and a tired economy, local mayor Giuseppe Ferrarello arranged to have the town’s many abandoned houses given away for free. The catch? The new homeowners must simply have the old houses renovated.
We met with Ferrarello and many of the enthusiastic new homeowners to learn more about the project and how this sleepy little town is waking up. Explore the full gallery of images here, or read the story for Air Berlin magazine here.
