Travel in Tuscany awakens thoughts of wandering hills and verdant panoramas. With such stunning landscapes comes hordes of eager tourists. To escape the relentless crowds and see another side of Tuscany, travelers might consider visiting the region in its winter off-season, as I did while on a shoot for the New York Times.
My trip led me to the Maremma district of Tuscany, with still lakes teaming with bird life, sleepy medieval villages nestled on hilltops, coastline castles and, of course, friendly and welcoming locals.
